Birmingham, AL. – Data Solutions & Technology Incorporated President & CEO Deborah Scott Thomas was presented the 2014 Innovator Awardat the National Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) Women’s Empowerment Luncheon. The event was part of the civil rights organization’s 56th Annual Convention held at the Sheraton Hotel Birmingham, where more than 200 civic, social and business leaders from across the country were in attendance.
The luncheon reflected upon the impact women have made during the creation of the SCLC, and continue to have in education, philanthropy and corporate America. Keynote speaker Dr. Gwendolyn Boyd, President, Alabama State University, spoke on the theme, “Beyond the Glass Ceiling: The Global Achievement of Women.”
Other awardees recognized during the luncheon included: Juandalynn Givan Esq., State Rep. House 60th District, Birmingham, Alabama; Rev. Bernice A. King, Chief Executive Officer of The King Center; Daphne Kwok, Chair of the President’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders; Beverly Robertson, Former President, National Civil Rights Museum; Terri A. Sewell, Congresswoman, Alabama’s 7th District; and Nancy Worley, Chairperson, Alabama Democratic Party.
The four-day, 56th Annual Conference commemorated the significance of the Birmingham Campaign of 1963, which paved the way for the Civil Rights Acts of 1964. It also celebrated efforts of the Civil Rights community 50 years after the signing of the Voting Rights Act.
